FAQs
Welcome to Tailo’s FAQ page. Here you’ll find straight answers to the questions we’re asked most often by institutions, staff, and students.
🔒 Privacy & Data
-
No. We never sell personal data. Tailo only collects basic login details, usage analytics, and learning preferences to improve the service.
-
US pilot users: data is hosted in the US.
UK/EU users: data is hosted in the EU (AWS Ireland). Authentication is handled securely via Descope, with protections like Standard Contractual Clauses in place
-
Yes. Users (or their institutions) can request deletion at any time. We remove or anonymise data unless we’re legally required to keep it.
🤖 Tailo’s AI
-
No. Tailo is designed to support comprehension, not replace learning. It won’t write essays, answer exam questions, or produce work students can submit.
-
Break down complex readings into manageable parts
Summarise sections for easier focus
Explain tricky terms or ideas
Suggest reflective questions to build critical thinking
Help manage study time with structured prompts
-
Safeguards stop Tailo from generating assessment-ready answers. If a request risks breaching academic integrity, the system offers guidance instead.
⚖️ Policies & Security
-
We comply with UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018, FERPA (for US institutions), and relevant US state privacy laws such as CCPA/CPRA.
-
We use strong security practices for data storage and transfer, including AWS hosting, encrypted authentication, and strict controls for service providers.
📝 Terms of Use
-
You (or your institution) retain ownership of all uploaded content. Tailo only processes it to provide the service, under the Terms of Service.
-
Students must ensure their submitted work is their own, and institutions set their integrity policies. Tailo is a support tool — not a substitute for original student work.

🚀 Using Tailo
-
Tailo currently supports any PDF or Word Document. As part of our product roadmap, we will continue to develop Tailo to support other file formats in line with student needs.
-
Tailo is perfect for reading and summarising academic papers, articles, textbook chapters, and more.
We recommend uploading individual articles rather than whole textbooks.
-
No, Tailo does not change the content a student uploads or generates any new content. Rather, Tailo extracts the text, images, tables, and charts and transforms the format into a new, consistent, interactive format. What is written in the document remains the same.
-
Tailo has been designed with accessibility at the forefront. This means that there is little to no training required for getting started. Students are guided through creating their account and reading identity with simple instructions. For tutorials and support, students can access the Student Support Portal.
We also have a range of tutorials available here.
